The Salmon World Aquarium Experience is a visitor experience designed around the local Salmon of the Rakaia River. The entire Salmon attraction includes a large salmon tank holding adult Salmon linked to a number of small pools and streams. As well as salmon, these smaller pools and streams contain other local freshwater fishes such as:
As you follow the Rakaia Gorge Trail, visitors will be able to see the salmon life cycle from the salmon egg stages through to smolt and finally the adult fish. You will be able to learn about the history and operation of the Rakaia River Salmon fishery and view on monitors how Salmon are artificially spawned to allow fry to be reared for release into the Rakaia River. There is a strong educational aspect ideal for children, this is suitable for school and educational groups.
Come and Feed the Fish
At specified times during the day you will be able to feed the Salmon, Trout and Eels (you may just have to watch your fingers with the eels.)
