SALMON WORLD
In 2003 the current owners of the Salmon World complex looked at a bare piece of land that in their opinion was strategically located on and "island" surrounded by State Highway 1 and Railway Terrace East which is directly conected to Thompsons Track and the gateway to the Southern Lakes. Adjacent to Salmon World is the renowned "Big Salmon on a Pole" and the much used Public Toilets.
The land was purchased from the Ashburton District Council and plans were drwan up by local architect Nigel Lamb. Local companies were contracted to build the uniquely salmon shaped building and the Salmon Tales Complex (Stage 1) was born. Stage 2 - Salmon World is based around Rakaia and the Salmon. The freshwater Aquarium and 4D Movie portraying many of the adventure tourism activities offered within Mid canterbury is well supported by a small retail outlet selling Salmon items including fresh, smoked and cured salmon.
Salmon World is located adjacent to the Rakaia River on the north side of State Highway One. Previously recognised as the Salmon Tales complex, the site and the uniquely Salmon Shaped Building is now branded as Salmon World. The "Big Salmon" on the pole is located directly opposite Salmon World and has successfully built on the reputation of Rakaia as the Salmon Capital of New Zealand.
Salmon World is a busy, thriving place and an ideal stop for both Tourists and Kiwis. The whole experience is different, special, memorable and unique. Children love to see and feed the fish as well as take a spectacular ride in the 4D Movie Theatre. Local schools and tour groups can book to come and follow the salmon life cycle through from the egg to adult stages. There is plenty of onsite parking available for cars and buses.
